Kuusela

The Kuusela housing block, completed in 1947, represents postwar “soft Functionalism”. The pitched roof, solid round wooden balcony rails and vertical pole screens of the entrances refer to vernacular building, while at the same time showing that Aalto’s architecture is close to nature.

The unique apartments of Kuusela

Kuusela, built in 1947, differs from other structures in Sunila not only by the time of its completion but also its architecture. The pitched roof, hole-in-wall windows, log- like wooden balcony rails reminiscent of national romanticism and other details of the building make it an essential example of the post-war soft functionalism. Kuusela also differs from the previous systematic buildings when it comes to the floor plan. You can find apartments ranging from 18 m 2 single room apartments all the way to 105 m 2 four-room apartments.

Kuusela underwent a comprehensive renovation of the sewage, water and electrical systems in 2004-2005, combined with new up-to-date bathrooms in place of the old toilets. While reforming the apartments, changes to the interiors and details have been minimized so that they can remain original for as long as possible. See Mäntylä-Honkala.
