The location of Sunila

The delta of the Kymi river was an excellent place to found wood processing companies. The raw wood was floated along the river and the finished products were loaded onto ships. The founding of nine saw mills in the Kotka-Kymi area in the years 1871-1876 was a one-of-a-kind event in the industrial history of Finland. One of these saw mills was built in Sunila on the easternmost branch of the Kymi river.

In 1928 seven wood refinement companies bought the sawmill along with its land as a strategic reserve. In 1936 they decided to build a pulp mill with its associated the residential area. This collaboration was a first of its kind in Finland. Expectations for the architectural, technical and social objectives were high. Alvar Aalto was chosen as the architect for this project. The pulp mill rose on the island of Pyötinen and the residential area was built on the forested slopes around a field on the mainland.

Sunila is now part of the city of Kotka. The island of Kotka, which is the center of the city, is about 11,5 kilometers from Sunila.

The Karhula bus station is a 3 kilometer walk from Sunila. Several local bus lines go from the bus station and a taxi stand is right next to it.

Bus line 1 Kotka-Hamina stops at the Rauhala primary school (about 2.3 km away). Lines 5B and 25T go along Ratakatu-Sunilantie and line 6 goes on the side of Metsäkulma along Hallantie.
